A space to learn about wedding invitation Design, etiquette and stationery history
This is partfourteen of a series called One a Day in May, where we will review one wedding stationery term every day in May!
Envelope liners are pieces of paper, cardstock, or even vellum that are cut to the shape of the envelope flap. They are inserted inside the envelope and adhered to the flap. Liners can be a solid color, a pattern, or a beautiful custom illustration of your venue or landscape that is significant to your wedding.
Liners are a great way to add a little extra design to your invitation suite without overpowering the invitation or enclosure cards themselves. We love the way envelope liners look in flat lays of suites because it can really add to the design of the suite.
They are traditionally used on inner envelopes, which aren’t sealed. When your guests receive an invitation with an outer and an inner envelope, the inner envelope, and its liner, will stay intact. If you put an envelope liner on an outer (mailing) envelope, it’s more likely to get ripped open by the recipient, since the envelope is sealed.
It is totally okay to use an envelope liner on an outer envelope, just know that some people open envelopes like animals and just rip into them and destroy liners, which makes me die a little each time.
