There are actually a ton of different envelope flap styles – square, straight, baronial, commercial, and our favorite – European.  The European flap is often called Euro flap for short.

This envelope style is also sometimes called “deep flap” and it refers to the depth to which the point on your envelope protrudes down the back. When you go to the store to buy mom a greeting card, you will most likely get a Baronial or straight flap. These styles juuuust cover the throat of the envelope. The throat is the opening of the envelope and can vary in height based on the envelope. We love the Euro flap style, because the throat is so big, and it shows off the invitation before the guests even take it out!

Euro flap envelopes have HUGE flaps, which create a big canvas for envelope liners. They reach almost to the bottom of the envelope and are generally considered to look a little more elegant. Most manufacturers of Euro/deep flap envelopes automatically use nicer quality paper to make their products as well, which is what you want for special mail, like wedding invitations! Different envelope manufacturers use slightly different depths for Euro flaps, so sometimes envelope liners printed elsewhere, might not fit. Just a little thing to keep in mind when you fall in love with an envelope color and want to get your liners printed elsewhere.
